To make the task of budget planning a little more concrete, we explore in this chapter the daily budgets and experiences of four types of travelers. These travelers all have the same daily agenda; their only differences are in how and where they eat, sleep and get around.

They are based on composites of real people, some of whom you will meet in your travels. The daily situations are a realistic portrayal of an average travel day in Europe.

Our travelers, named for their nightly accommodations, are Parking Pete, Carla and Calvin Camper, Hostel Hanna and Guesthouse Gertie and Gabi. First we will look at their various methods of travel, and then cross-reference the costs on a small chart.
